Mixed Medium Constructions
Not just a blanket. . .
My work invites intimacy and a new experience of surface and tactility. Its visual qualities are joined by those designed to be perceived by touch. Just as line, shape, color, and texture are integral to movement-based art forms, these same elements inform my work with fabric communicating mastery and changing perception of what can be done with cloth. My relationship to the tactile qualities of the materials drives this body of work while the repetitive and meditative aspects sooth and connect to the earth. My artist’s journey unfolds through an active manifestation of beauty, wholeness, and wisdom.
Techniques. . .
I employ techniques of sewing, drawing, painting, and needle felting. Until recently, the felting was done, primarily, by hand with one barbed needle penetrating pieces of yarn and wool to create a design or felted surface. Currently, I use a machine with five barbed needles running at 900 punches per minute. I also use this tool to deconstruct fabric and change its surface appearance. In building and constructing an abstracted form or canvas, I fit pieces of cloth, paper, and wool fibers together in strong vertical and horizontal lines. These two distinct directions suggest a strong figurative element. Like the up and down of a tree or the side to side of where sky and sea meet, an act of threading a needle by hand to carry thread that repairs that which is torn or to adorn an other wise plain surface with colorful stitches is what connects me to my ancestors who dye, spin, weave and cut.
